Trip Itinerary

December 31: Fly into Chennai.

Your driver will pick you up and take you to our gorgeous eco-resort in Mahabalipuram.

*Option to fly in a day early, and pay for an extra night’s stay. We can help coordinate this for you.

We will welcome the new year with a gentle, intentional landing right staying right on the beautiful waters of the Bay of Bengal. Declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO, Mahabalipuram boasts some of India’s most sublime rock art, caves and shore temple. While spending our first days of pilgrimage in Mamallapuram (as its called by locals), we will balance our time between yoga and meditation practice in our shala by the sea, and visits to the rock temples of Durga, Arjuna, Ganesha. Be tantalized by Hannah’s mythic storytelling while experiencing these incredible 7th century masterpieces.

January 3: Next stop - Tiruvannamalai and the legendary Arunachalam.

All aboard our private bus (equipped with a/c) for Tiruvannamalai! Here we will soak up Arunachala Hill and its powerful caves, the Sri Ramanasramam, and many other secret treasures of this pilgrim’s dream. Great Indian saint, Sri Ramana Maharshi called Arunachala the spiritual Heart of the World. Aruna, which means ‘red, bright like fire’, does not signify the mere fire that gives off heat. Rather, it means Jnanagni, the Fire of Wisdom. Achala signifies hill. Thus, Arunachala means ‘Hill of Wisdom’. While in “Tiru”, we will stay at our favorite eco-resort with a beautiful pool, activities like chai-making, pottery-making, and options for massage and other ayurvedic treatments, if you’re called. In addition to our daily pilgrimages to sacred nature and temple sites, we have built in down time for quiet self-inquiry, guided practice overlooking the holy hill.

January 6: The oldest Nataraja in history, and an unforgettable Goddess temple.

Chidambaram is one of the most ancient and revered temples in all of India. Here we will receive darshana with the oldest still-worshipped Nataraja on the planet, in his Ananda Tandava, the cosmic dance of bliss. In addition to this otherworldly temple, we will receive darshana at Hannah’s most beloved Kali temple nearby, where the Goddess will receive you in her form of fierce love. This is the one night our lodging will be more simple, so that we can stay in walking distance to the temples and have optimal time for devotion.

January 8: Respite in a heritage hotel full of unique wonders.

Arriving the evening before in Kumbakonam, we will enjoy 2 nights of down time for mid-journey integration, respite and contemplative practice. A truly unique historical hotel complete with a museum-worthy collection of vintage Indian art, beautiful pool area, statues and fountains. The surrounding neighbors are well-known metal and bronze artists who’s families have been constructing diety statues for hundreds of years.

January 9: Blessed by the holy water temple by the sea.

Next we travel to the tip of India, only 40 kilometers from Sri Lanka, to the legendary island of Rameshwaram, considered to be one of the holiest places in all of India. (For any Ramayana fans and Hanuman devotees out there: this is where it was said Hanuman, Ram et al. built “Ram’s Bridge.”) Here the dry tropical climate is quite inviting for our visit to the Rameshwaram water temple, where we receive darshana through a series of over 2 dozen water blessings - a sensory delight and exquisite initiation. We will also have time to visit the isthmus at sunset and enjoy all this magical shore has to offer.

January 11: Madurai, where the Goddess awaits us.

Landing to our final destination, the city of Madurai has a great cultural heritage and strong mythological history to be explored. Over 2500 years old, we will tour the city, have the opportunity to do some service work with local children, visit the famous Meenaksi goddess temple, and close our life-changing pilgrimage with a house party in the local community with home-cooked food, dancing and henna. Blessed we are!

January 13: Fly home, or continue on with your own journey

We will arrange transportation for you to the Madurai airport, based on your flight time. Our closing circle will be the night before, and we recommend flying out after 10am.

What past participants have to say:

“All of our ceremonies were so meaningful and perfect! Every site, every tree, every experience has changed me, and I truly feel like I have been part of such a sacred experience. I find that I am so much more grounded and can find peace with every situation as never before. I was called there, and the entire experience left an indelible mark on my heart. It has enriched me more than any other experience could have. I will be forever changed and always think of our time with such a grateful, open heart.”

Some of our lodging are eco-resorts in natural settings, while others are historic elegant hotels that have been updated for modern comforts. There will be one night when our lodging will be more simple - in Chidambaram. This is a very special temple, and the hotels here are all very small. The only way to see this temple (which is NOT to be missed as it houses the first Śiva Nataraj statue!), is to stay in a small, quaint, local hotel for one night. We love the places we stay, and have developed wonderful relationships with the staff over the years of travel here. The spaces are lovely, the food is consistently delicious and safe to eat, and the service is wonderful.

The focus of the trip is devotional, rather than high-impact fitness yoga. We value accessibility and inclusion, and all experience of yoga practice, including beginner, are welcome.

  • On some days, we will be walking merely around a temple area, while other days there will be more intensive walking to visit to caves, Giri Pradakshina, and other spiritual quests. If you are concerned about walking and your physical wellbeing, please contact us and we can talk it over with you.
